"The companions of fear"

Rene Magritte - Oil - 70 x 92 cm

famous painting The companions of fear of Rene Magritte

Magritte’s work has served to provoke our thoughts and question our perception of reality. Although his paintings are mysterious, Magritte insists that we do not question what we see, else we forget to see it. In this way, the enigmatic images have no veiled information. In The companions of fear, Magritte depicts the owl, raven and grouse growing from the land and staring at the viewer. These are animals often associated with fear in many cultures, owls are nocturnal and represent an eerie intelligence, grouses inhabit peaks and ravens are considered signs of death, or pain, hence the noun attributed to them: “ an unkindness” and “a conspiracy” or ravens. He presents these birds as symbols of our fear, rooted in ancient culture. They grow from the earth to suggest that they are rooted in our history.
