وُلد بومبرج لأبوين مهاجرين بولنديين يهود، أبراهام وريبيكا بومبرج، وبدأ مسيرته الدراسية في مدرسة "سيتي آند غيلدز" للفنون التقنية قبل أن يتخصص في فن الطباعة الحجرية في برمنغهام.
