George Arthur Hickin (born c. 1830, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire; died 1916, Stoke Newington, London) was a British landscape painter who achieved considerable renown during the Victorian era, particularly for his depictions of birds and rural wildlife.
Little is known about Hickin’s formative years. He apprenticed as a printer in Wolverhampton before embarking on independent artistic pursuits. Despite lacking formal academic qualifications—he never enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art—his innate talent shone through from an early age, securing commissions for portraits alongside landscapes.
Hickin’s artistic sensibilities were profoundly shaped by the pioneering landscape painters John Constable and William Turner. Like Constable, he championed Realism, striving to authentically represent rural England with meticulous observation and painstaking detail—a commitment to capturing the true essence of the countryside.
Turner's dramatic exploration of light and color instilled in Hickin a fascination for atmospheric effects and expressive brushwork, influencing his compositional choices and injecting emotion into his canvases. This dual inspiration cemented his stylistic trajectory towards Naturalism.
Hickin’s enduring fame rests primarily on his prolific output of bird paintings—a genre that flourished during the Victorian period.
