Basquiat’s initial foray into the art scene began not with canvases and brushes, but with spray paint and walls. Alongside Al Diaz, he formed the graffiti duo SAMO (an acronym for “same old, same new”), transforming the city's brick facades into a sprawling dialogue of cryptic epigrams and provocative statements.
