Born in 1856 in the quiet town of Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, Ryland emerged from a lineage of British craftsmanship to become a master of the idyllic. Ryland’s artistic evolution was shaped by an extraordinary education that spanned the great art capitals of Europe. Ryland’s specialty lay in the creation of serene, idealized worlds populated by young women draped in classical attire. Unlike many of his peers who ventured into the provocative, Ryland maintained a sense of purity and virtue, focusing instead on the harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural landscape.
