Jina Seo is a South Korean jewelry artist based in the Midwest, whose work delves into profound ideas about the human body and space using enamel and diverse materials. Her artistic vision seeks to capture the essence of existence—the interplay between internal experience and external form—resulting in pieces that are both visually striking and conceptually rich.
Born , South Korea (), Seo’s journey began with a formal education at Kookmin University, where she honed her skills in metalwork and jewelry design. Subsequently, she pursued advanced studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, earning an MFA specializing in Metal Jewelry Design. This academic foundation provided her with critical insights into artistic theory and technique, shaping her approach to crafting exceptional jewelry.
Seo’s artistic practice centers around transforming vintage leather gloves into symbolic wearable objects—a deliberate choice that embodies her fascination with materiality and transformation. Through meticulous layering of enamel pigments onto metal surfaces, she achieves a remarkable feat: capturing the subtle nuances of texture and color while simultaneously conveying deeper meanings related to memory, desire, and vulnerability. Her work is characterized by an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and a sensitivity to artistic expression.
Her artistic philosophy is rooted in the belief that objects possess an inherent power—a capacity to evoke emotion and communicate ideas beyond their physical form. Inspired by the teachings of Buddha (“The Mind is Everything. What You Think, You Become”), Seo emphasizes the importance of perseverance and intentionality in creative endeavors.
She actively engages with the broader artistic community through her involvement as a board member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and contributes to fostering creativity by conducting workshops at prestigious craft schools like Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Seo’s dedication to artistic education underscores her conviction that cultivating curiosity and embracing challenges are crucial for unlocking one's creative potential.
Her work has been showcased internationally, including Munich Jewellery Week 2017, Baltimore Jewelry Center, NY; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Sung-Gock Gallery, Seoul, Korea, and Vilnius, Lithuania.
