Beskrivelse af kunstværket

In July 2019, Mistaker Maker was invited to produce two public art interventions, integrated in the 2nd edition of the Festival dos Espantalhos (in english, ‘Scarecrow Festival’), which takes place every year in Oliveira de Azeméis.To work on the theme of the glass industry, which is now almost extinct in this territory, but once was the main activity between the local community, we invited the spanish artist Manolo Mesa, who, helped by his brother Francisco Mesa and after researching on site, developed their proposal on a wall with over 300m2, located in one of the busiest areas of the city.

Kunstnerens biografi

Manuel Mesa Quirós: A Painter of Passion and Spanish Spirit

Born in San Roque, a small coastal town in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, in 1952, Manuel ‘Manolo’ Mesa Quirós is an artist whose work resonates deeply with the spirit of his homeland. While initially recognized for a distinguished career as a professional footballer – spending twelve pivotal years with Sporting de Gijón and amassing over 400 competitive appearances – it was later in life that Mesa discovered his true calling: painting. This transition, fueled by a lifelong love of observation and a keen eye for detail honed on the football pitch, has resulted in a captivating body of work characterized by evocative landscapes and powerful depictions of sporting themes.

Mesa’s artistic journey began after retiring from professional football at the age of 40. The discipline and intense focus required during his playing career – earning him the nickname “Seven Lungs” for his remarkable stamina – undoubtedly informed his approach to painting. He sought to capture not just the visual reality of a scene, but also the underlying emotion and energy within it. His early works frequently featured scenes from his beloved Sporting de Gijón, capturing the fervor of the crowd, the dynamism of the game, and the faces of the players – imbued with a palpable sense of determination and passion.

The Landscape as Narrative

Mesa’s landscapes are particularly striking. He doesn't simply paint pretty pictures; instead, he uses color and composition to tell stories about the Spanish countryside. His canvases often depict rugged coastlines, rolling hills dotted with olive groves, and dramatic mountain ranges – all rendered with a remarkable sensitivity to light and atmosphere. The influence of the Escuela de la Coruña, a prominent regionalist art movement known for its focus on depicting the natural beauty of Galicia and Northern Spain, is subtly present in his work’s earthy tones and emphasis on capturing the essence of local environments.

However, Mesa's style transcends mere imitation. He imbues his landscapes with a personal narrative, often incorporating elements that hint at the lives and traditions of the people who inhabit these regions. A solitary shepherd tending his flock, a weathered farmhouse nestled amongst the hills, or a winding road leading into the distance – each detail contributes to a larger sense of place and history.

Sporting Themes: Capturing the Essence of Competition

While landscapes form a significant part of Mesa’s oeuvre, it is perhaps his depictions of sporting events that are most immediately recognizable. These aren't simply straightforward representations of football matches; they are dynamic, emotionally charged scenes that capture the intensity and drama of competition. He masterfully portrays the physicality of the game – the straining muscles, the desperate tackles, the jubilant celebrations – while simultaneously conveying the underlying camaraderie and passion shared by players and supporters alike.

Mesa’s ability to translate the energy of a football match onto canvas is remarkable. He utilizes bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors to create a sense of movement and immediacy. His paintings often feature blurred action, capturing fleeting moments of brilliance and highlighting the key figures within the scene. The faces of the players are particularly expressive, conveying a range of emotions – determination, frustration, joy, and exhaustion.

Technique and Legacy

Mesa’s technique is characterized by a confident brushwork and a skillful use of color. He employs a layered approach to painting, building up his compositions gradually through multiple layers of paint. His works often exhibit a rich texture and depth, inviting the viewer to explore every detail. While he draws inspiration from regionalist traditions, Mesa’s style is distinctly his own – blending elements of realism with expressive brushwork.

Manuel Mesa Quirós represents a fascinating example of an artist who found a new passion later in life. His journey from professional footballer to accomplished painter demonstrates the transformative power of creativity and the enduring appeal of capturing the spirit of one’s homeland. His work continues to resonate with audiences, offering a vibrant glimpse into the heart of Spain – its landscapes, its traditions, and its unwavering love for sport.
