Kunstnerens biografi

The Sculptor of Lanzarote’s Soul

Born amidst the volcanic landscapes of Teguise, Lanzarote, in 1985, Rigoberto Camacho Pérez carries the raw, elemental spirit of his island home into the realm of contemporary sculpture. His artistic identity is inextricably linked to the rugged textures and profound silences of the Canary Islands, a landscape that serves as both his sanctuary and his primary muse. From his earliest years, the artist found inspiration in the ancestral rhythms of local tradition, specifically within the Carnaval de Guía y Almanzora. It was here, amidst the vibrant celebrations of the Diablete—a symbolic figure of folklore—that Camacho Pérez first began to manipulate the earth itself. As a child, he would venture into the island's ravines to gather clay, molding primitive masks and carcasses that sought to capture the essence of this legendary character. This early, instinctive connection to material and myth laid the foundation for a career dedicated to exploring the delicate tension between humanity, memory, and the natural world.

To refine this primal instinct, Camacho Pérez transitioned from the intuitive workshops of his youth to the rigorous academic environments of Madrid. His journey through the Universidad Complutense de Madrid was transformative, providing him with the intellectual tools necessary to elevate his sculptural practice from folk-inspired craftsmanship to sophisticated contemporary discourse. By earning a degree in Fine Arts and subsequently a Master’s degree in Research Art & Creation, he developed a profound capacity for critical analysis. This academic rigor allowed him to move beyond mere representation, enabling him to delve into the conceptual complexities of form and space. His work today is characterized by this very duality: a deep-seated respect for traditional materiality paired with a modern, investigative approach to how sculpture occupies and alters the environment.

A Dialogue Between Form and Space

The essence of Camacho Pérez’s oeuvre lies in his ability to evoke profound emotional responses through the manipulation of volume and void. His sculptures often act as silent narrators, telling stories of identity and the passage of time. He approaches the medium not merely as a creator of objects, but as an architect of experiences, frequently engaging with public art to bridge the gap between the gallery and the community. One of his most significant professional and emotional milestones was the creation of Elégua, a monument that pays homage to the Diablete of Teguise, effectively bringing his childhood inspirations into the permanent public consciousness of his homeland.

His artistic development has been further enriched by a spirit of collaboration and an openness to global influences. While deeply rooted in the Spanish tradition, he draws inspiration from the visual impact and biting wit of artists like Paul MacCarthy, integrating a sense of contemporary dialogue into his work. His career is marked by several prestigious recognitions and international engagements, including:

  • The First Prize for Sculpture in Ayllón, which signaled his emergence as a significant talent in the Spanish sculptural scene.
  • Residencies at La Neomudéjar, providing him with the space to experiment with large-scale installations and new media.
  • Participation in International Art Fairs, such as JustMad and Just LX in Lisbon, as well as exhibitions that have reached audiences as far as Shanghai and Colombia.
  • Institutional Recognition, with his works held in esteemed collections including the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona.

Through his teaching roles at the Universidad Complutense and his ongoing doctoral research, Camacho Pérez continues to push the boundaries of what sculpture can achieve. His work remains a testament to the power of place, proving that even the most localized inspirations—the clay of a Lanzarote ravine or the mask of a carnival figure—can resonate with universal truths about our connection to the earth and our shared human history.
