His early years in Paris were defined by a pivotal moment of redirection; originally trained in the tactile discipline of sculpture, it was the wise counsel of his mentor, Jacques Sarazin, that steered him toward the canvas. This shift from stone to pigment allowed Blanchet to explore a broader spectrum of light and movement, setting the stage for a career that would eventually bridge the sophisticated sensibilities of the School of Fontainebleau with the grand, theatrical spirit of Rome.
The trajectory of Blanchet’s artistry was irrevocably altered by his transformative journey to Italy. Arriving in Rome around 1645, he found himself immersed in one of the most fertile artistic environments in European history. He did not merely observe the masters; he actively integrated into the intellectual and creative currents of the time. By working within the influential circle of Nicolas Poussin and engaging with the studios of Andrea Sacchi and Pietro da Cortona, Blanchet absorbed a classical rigor and a sense of monumental composition. His presence in Rome was further validated by the high esteem in which he was held, notably receiving praise from the legendary Gianlode Bernini. This Roman period infused his work with a structural clarity and a dramatic intensity that would become the hallmark of his mature style.
Blanchet’s talent was remarkably versatile, defying the boundaries of a single discipline. While he is celebrated as a painter, his contributions as a draughtsman, printmaker, architect, and sculptor allowed him to approach art with a holistic understanding of space and form. One of his most significant achievements was the design of a magnificent mausoleum for René de Voyer d’Argenson, a project that demanded a seamless marriage of sculptural detail and architectural vision. His engravings of ancient tombs further demonstrated his ability to capture meticulous classical detail, reflecting the humanist fascination with antiquity that permeated the era.
