Despite being created by different artists, the jewelry of the Wiener Werkstätte was defined by an individual style which distinguished it from the rest of the international production. This jewelry is characterized by a border which surrounds the inner motif and is composed of basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, ovals, or octagons. This is also the case in the here presented brooch, in which a square surrounds a stylized tree with narrow, drawn-out leaves in front of a mother-of-pearl background. Dagobert Peche, one of the most creative and most sensitive designers of the Wiener Werkstätte, was head of the Zurich branch of the Wiener Werkstätte from 1917 to 1919. This is also where his drawings of jewelry and metal objects were implemented.
