Initially drawn to music as a supplementary study – he took courses at the Central Conservatory of Music alongside his academic pursuits – Li Jian discovered a profound resonance with traditional Chinese melodies and a desire to translate complex emotions into evocative song lyrics. This early foundation, combined with a keen ear for Western musical influences, has shaped a distinctive artistic voice that seamlessly blends poetic lyricism with sophisticated arrangements.
Li Jian’s career began in 2002 following his departure from the popular band “Shui Mu Nian Hua.” This marked a pivotal moment, allowing him to fully explore his own musical vision. His early albums, particularly "Si Shui Liu Nian" (2003) and "Wei Ni Er Lai" (2005), established him as a singer deeply rooted in the traditions of Chinese folk music while simultaneously embracing modern production techniques. Li Jian’s breakthrough moment arrived in 2010, when his song “Chuan Qi” (Legend), performed by the iconic Faye Wong for the Spring Festival Gala, catapulted him to national fame.
