For the 5th EDITION of WOOL, once again we brought to Covilhã a group of 4 artists, 2 portuguese and 2 foreigners.Pastel (Argentina), Roc Blackblock (Spain), Aheneah (Portugal) and Draw (Portugal) were invited to develop interventions in the historic center, once again inspired by the local identity, which we consider to be everything that makes this place unique: traditions, songs, gastronomy, personalities, history, fauna and flora, etc. After surprising everyone with the identity of WOOL 2018 in carpet form (and material), Aheneah came to Covilhã to pay homage to her great-grandmother Narcisa, to whom she owes all the teachings that she continues to practice and promote in her daily work.I think we can extend the thread and say that this is a tribute to all the great-grandparents, grandmothers and mothers who help (or try to) keep these traditions alive.

Taiteilijan elämäkerta

Ana Martins: Weaving Narratives of Texture and Transformation

Ana Martins, known professionally as aheneah, is a Portuguese textile artist whose work transcends mere craft; it’s an exploration of materiality, perception, and storytelling. Born in Portugal in 1996, Martins embarked on her artistic journey with a fascination for the tactile qualities of fabric—a passion that would ultimately define her distinctive style and propel her to international recognition. Her formative years were spent immersed in European culture, fostering a deep appreciation for both tradition and innovation, influences which continue to permeate her creative process.
  • Early Influences: Martins’ initial explorations into textile art stemmed from an interest in historical weaving techniques and the symbolic significance of patterns—particularly those found in Portuguese folklore.
  • Formal Training: She pursued her MFA degree at Parsons School of Design in New York City, focusing on innovative approaches to textile manipulation and installation art. This academic grounding provided her with invaluable tools for conceptualizing ambitious projects that challenge conventional artistic boundaries.
Martins’ artistic vision centers around transforming ordinary fibers into monumental artworks—immersive installations that engage viewers on a sensory level. Her signature technique involves layering textiles with rigid materials like metal and concrete, creating sculptures that appear to defy gravity while simultaneously conveying narratives of resilience and metamorphosis. This juxtaposition of textures speaks volumes about her belief in the power of art to provoke contemplation and inspire dialogue.
  • Notable Projects: Her work has garnered acclaim for its conceptual depth and aesthetic impact, appearing in prestigious exhibitions across Europe, including Saint-Martin Museum in Colmar and Musée Baron Martin in Gray.
  • Collaborations: Martins actively collaborates with brands like Tous and Taguspark, integrating her artistic sensibilities into commercial projects—demonstrating a commitment to expanding the reach of textile art beyond the realm of fine art.
Currently, Martins continues to push the boundaries of her craft by experimenting with new materials and methodologies. Her dedication to fostering a conversation between tradition and innovation is evident in every piece she creates—a testament to her unwavering belief that textiles hold untapped potential for artistic expression. Featured prominently in publications such as “Unravelling Women’s Art” and “Designboom,” Ana Martins' work has solidified its place within the contemporary art landscape, securing her reputation as a visionary artist who reimagines the possibilities of fiber art.
