Description de l'œuvre

Designer Clive Rundle from South Africa exchanged with artisan House of Thethana from Lesotho to create a bespoke The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. House of Thethana in Lesotho worked under Clive’s direction to design a custom textile print, achieved by superimposing one print onto another - welding two images together to create a visual to print onto silk for the final garment construction. The fabric was then screen-printed using water-based inks on to a silk ‘sandwich’ of organza, georgette, and habotai. The look consists of a wool and organza coat with Swarovski upcycled crystals, accompanied by wool and organza shorts and a woollen collar accessory. Lucilla Booyzen of SAFW facilitated the exchange. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

Biographie de l'artiste

Clive Rundle: The Dream Weaver of South African Fashion

Clive Rundle’s artistic journey commenced in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he was born in 1950. From a young age, he absorbed the vibrant tapestry of Zimbabwean culture—a formative experience that instilled within him an innate fascination for blending influences and pushing creative boundaries—traits which would soon define his distinctive design aesthetic. Following his education, he embarked on a transformative four-year exploration across Europe and the United States, immersing himself in the stylistic nuances championed by prominent artists and designers. This immersive period fueled his ambition to establish himself as a fashion innovator, driven by an unwavering desire for experimentation and artistic expression. Returning to South Africa during the era of apartheid, Rundle began his professional life as a designer amidst challenging socio-political circumstances. Recognizing the potent synergy between traditional craftsmanship and forward-thinking vision, he founded Clive Designs CC in 1988—a courageous declaration of entrepreneurial spirit and an unwavering commitment to artistic exploration. Initially supplying celebrated boutiques like Wizards, he honed his skills through meticulous observation and tireless experimentation, mastering techniques that would subsequently become synonymous with his signature style. The early years demanded ingenuity and perseverance; Rundle skillfully repurposed discarded fabrics and utilized rudimentary tools to breathe life into his designs—a poignant reflection of his dedication to sustainability and artistic integrity. His debut collection presented at the Cour Vitrée in Paris in 1989 garnered considerable acclaim, attracting the attention of influential figures within the fashion industry and establishing him as a visionary designer. Subsequent collaborations with international brands such as BVBA 32 broadened his horizons and solidified his position as a pioneer of South African fashion innovation—a testament to his ability to adapt to evolving trends while upholding a steadfast devotion to creative vision. Throughout his career, Rundle consistently championed unconventional materials and techniques into his garments, deliberately challenging conventional perceptions of beauty and craftsmanship. He famously articulated his creative process as “design-dreaming,” emphasizing the significance of intuition and imaginative exploration—a concept that resonated deeply with his artistic philosophy. A pivotal moment arrived in 2010 when he participated in Africa International Arise L’Afrique—Porté Autumn Show, presenting a paper at the Fourth International Conference on Design Principles and Practice in Chicago titled *Dividuality – An Ethnography of the Dress*. This intellectual engagement underscored his commitment to scholarly inquiry alongside artistic practice. Furthermore, Rundle showcased *One Pattern Piece, One Week, One Fabric, One Collection* at addictlab in Brussels and was featured in *Fast Forward Fashion *by Nathalie Grolimund—demonstrating his adaptability to contemporary trends while maintaining a steadfast dedication to creative vision. His influence extended beyond the fashion world; he served as South Africa’s representative at Global Fashion Capitals at FIT in New York, showcasing a garment from his Rorschach Collection which subsequently became part of the museum's permanent collection—a remarkable achievement reflecting his artistic legacy and contribution to cultural heritage. Subsequent acquisitions by Brighton Museum and Art Gallery solidified his reputation as a celebrated designer, recognizing the enduring beauty and innovation inherent in his creations. Clive Rundle’s work continues to inspire designers and artists alike, embodying the spirit of creativity, experimentation, and unwavering devotion to craft—a testament to his transformative impact on South African fashion history.
