Il a étudié la philosophie, l'histoire de l'art, la littérature, la psychologie et la psychiatrie à l'Université de Bonn de 1909.

Développement Artistique & Influences

Un moment décisif fut l'exposition Sonderbund à Cologne (1912), où il a découvert des œuvres de Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, et Paul Gauguin.
