Opis kolekcionarskog djela

The picture by Aleksandra Simińska, presenting a type of podium or stage, with the wings revealing a part of the distant landscape, is painted in the oil on canvas technique. In the colour scheme, there is a prevalence of the blue tones complemented by the diverse shades of grey. As a dominant colour, red appears present in the foreground and – as ulterior ones – greens and yellows. The architectural form, which is the principal motif, with steps or footlights leading to a kind of proscenium, is closed in both upper corners by the sheets of draped, heavy curtains. In the left part of the composition there is a vertical shape resembling a squat bottle. This imbalance in the proportions and scale between the elements of a still life and a landscape, and the manner of solids modelling with their perceptible weight, is reminiscent of the creation of Giorgio de Chirico. This connotation is also evoked by the ensemble of objects from a variety of seemingly incompatible worlds, and by a sort of ambivalence, indeterminate nature and destiny. But this clue leads even further, because the rigour of the convergent perspective, characteristic for many works of Aleksandra Simińska, always resulting in the widespread landscape on the horizon and the symbiosis of architecture and scenery (Tuscan?), seem to refer directly to the Italian paintings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. [F. Pręgowski]

Biografija umjetnika

A Tapestry of Memory and Vision

Aleksandra Simińska, born on September 5, 1962, in the Polish city of Włocławek, stands as a profound voice in contemporary Polish painting. Her artistic identity is a sophisticated weave of meticulous natural observation and a deep, scholarly engagement with the weight of art history. To encounter a Simińska canvas is to step into a space where the boundaries between reality and symbolism blur, inviting the viewer into a contemplative dialogue with themes of memory, landscape, and the enduring human experience. Her journey began with rigorous foundational training at the State High School of Fine Arts in Bydgoszcz, followed by her studies at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń from 1983 to 1988. Under the guidance of Professor Janusz Karczmarski, she developed a disciplined technical mastery that would become the bedrock of her monumental compositions.

The evolution of her style is inseparable from her academic and global odyssey. After serving as an assistant lecturer in Toruń, Simińska transitioned to the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, where she led the Painting Studio and eventually earned the prestigious title of Professor. This period of pedagogical leadership allowed her to refine her understanding of the dialogue between tradition and innovation. Her visual vocabulary was further enriched by extensive travels between 2004 and 2018, during which she absorbed the light and cultural textures of Vilnius, Madrid, London, Rome, New York, and Milan. These journeys did not merely provide new subjects but fundamentally expanded her ability to convey complex, multi-layered narratives through color and form.

The Architecture of the Soul

Simińska’s work is often characterized by its monumental scale and a structural rigor that evokes the masters of the past. Her paintings frequently employ a convergent perspective that directs the eye toward distant horizons, creating a sense of infinite depth. In works such as The Veil, one can observe a striking tension between architectural stability and atmospheric uncertainty. She masterfully utilizes heavy, draped curtains and stage-like podiums to frame landscapes, a technique that recalls the metaphysical enigmas of Giorgio de Chirico. This interplay of solid, weighted objects against vast, open vistas creates an ambivalence—a sense of being caught between the tangible world and a dreamscape.

Her technical prowess is most evident in her command of color and light. She often employs a palette where deep blues and somber greys are punctuated by sudden, vibrant interventions of red, green, or yellow. This careful modulation of tone serves to heighten the symbolic resonance of her subjects. Her thematic cycles demonstrate an incredible breadth of emotional range:

  • Aleppo: A poignant series inspired by the history of Aleppo, delving into themes of resilience, loss, and the heavy burden of remembrance.
  • Maenads: Works that explore more primal, mythological energies and the fluidity of human passion.
  • Double Landscape and Islands: Explorations of space, solitude, and the duality of nature.
  • Interiors with a Box: A study of containment, stillness, and the secrets held within domestic or enclosed spaces.

Legacy and Recognition

Beyond the canvas, Simińska’s significance lies in her role as a bridge between classical aesthetics and contemporary expression. Her career is marked by significant accolades, including the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture, a testament to her profound impact on the Polish artistic landscape. As a long-standing member and former vice-president of the Bydgoszcz District of the Association of Polish Visual Artists, she has remained deeply rooted in her community while maintaining an international perspective.

Her ability to synthesize the disciplined techniques of the fifteenth and sixteenth-century Italian masters with the existential inquiries of the modern era ensures that her work remains timeless. Whether through the haunting echoes of a war-torn city or the quiet stillness of a painted interior, Aleksandra Simińska continues to create art that does not merely depict the world, but interrogates the very essence of how we perceive and remember it.
