He was awarded one of the Academy's Cresson Traveling Scholarships in 1919, propelling him on a transformative journey to Italy during the summer of 1920, an experience that profoundly impacted his aesthetic sensibilities and fueled his burgeoning fascination with abstraction. Returning to Paris in 1926 and 1927, Levi immersed himself in the vibrant artistic milieu of the era, forging connections with fellow artists like Jules Pascin and encountering luminaries such as Salvador Dalí through the auspices of Julien Levy Gallery—a collaboration that would introduce Dalí’s surrealist visions to American audiences.
