John Joseph Sheridan's "Poster," created in 1917 during the First World War, transcends mere visual decoration; it embodies a pivotal moment in American history and artistic expression. Produced by the United States Food Administration, this artwork serves as a powerful testament to the urgency of wartime conservation efforts and skillfully employs symbolism to galvanize public support for bolstering Allied forces.
Dominating the upper portion of the composition is a prominent American flag—a deliberate symbol of national pride and resilience. Positioned against a sunset background, it represents not only the nation’s commitment to its allies but also embodies hope for brighter futures. Sheridan's masterful use of color enhances this symbolic resonance, conveying warmth and reassurance amidst the grim realities of battlefield experience.
"Poster," like many artworks produced during wartime, speaks powerfully to the human condition—specifically, the desire for unity and purpose in times of crisis. Sheridan’s work exemplifies the Art Deco movement's embrace of geometric forms and bold colors, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward modernity and optimism. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to communicate complex ideas concisely and effectively, cementing its place as an iconic representation of American patriotism during World War I.
John Joseph Sheridan (born October 1st, 1964) is a fascinating figure whose life transcends traditional categorization. While widely recognized as a former professional football player and manager, he has also emerged as an artist creating vibrant posters and unique artwork.
Born in Manchester, England, Sheridan’s initial passion lay with football. He began his playing career at Manchester City before making a significant impact at Leeds United, where he scored an impressive 47 league goals in 230 appearances. His journey continued with brief stints at Nottingham Forest under the legendary Brian Clough and then Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheridan’s time at Sheffield Wednesday proved pivotal. He etched his name into football history by scoring the winning goal in the 1991 Football League Cup Final held at Wembley Stadium – a moment forever remembered by fans of the club.
Sheridan continued playing for several clubs including Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers (where he won the First Division title in 1997), and Doncaster Rovers. He ultimately spent the final six years of his playing career at Oldham Athletic, scoring 14 league goals in 144 appearances.
Sheridan seamlessly transitioned into management, initially serving as a caretaker manager for Oldham Athletic during his playing days. He later took on the full-time managerial role in 2006, remaining with the club until 2009. His managerial career has been characterized by numerous appointments at various clubs including Chesterfield (where he achieved League Two success and the Football League Trophy), Plymouth Argyle, Newport County, and multiple returns to Oldham Athletic, as well as spells with Notts County, Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United, Waterford, Wigan Athletic, and Swindon Town.
Beyond the world of football, Sheridan has cultivated a passion for art. He creates vibrant posters and artwork that reflect his creative vision. While details about his artistic influences are currently limited, his work demonstrates a contemporary style with bold colors and dynamic compositions.
John Joseph Sheridan represents a unique intersection of athletic achievement and artistic expression. His story is one of versatility, resilience, and the pursuit of multiple passions. While primarily celebrated for his football career, his emergence as an artist adds another layer to his legacy, demonstrating that creativity can flourish in unexpected places.
