Walter Joseph Phillips (1884-1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and printmaker celebrated for his pivotal role in popularizing the colour woodcut technique within Canada. Born in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, England, Phillips demonstrated an early aptitude for art. He received his foundational training at the Birmingham School of Art. Before immigrating to Canada, he worked as a commercial artist in England.

Initially working in watercolour, he soon turned his attention to woodcut printing, inspired by the *Ukiyo-e* tradition of Japanese printmaking.
Phillips’ artistic style was profoundly influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. He admired their bold colours, simplified forms, and masterful use of line.
