Beschrijving verzamelobject

The structure of Lashai’s paintings is based on earth, trees, flowers and plants, i.e. the elements of nature. The language she employed is somewhat traditional, but she was successful in giving this language a new and updated accent. Her works are neither superficial illustrations of the world we see around ourselves nor images of an ideal world. Instead they are the creations of an artist who, bewildered by the richness and infinity of nature, disclosed all her artistic experience on the canvas, hoping to illustrate the evanescent moments of her surroundings. Lashai’s nature has a metaphysical significance and is the reflection of a sort of intrinsic awareness; it is a small part of a general landscape that seemingly has been painted in absolute timelessness, a nature that is actualised through its bond with humankind’s inner conflicts.

Biografie van de kunstenaar

The Formative Years and European Influence

Farideh Lashai, a name synonymous with the evolution of Iranian contemporary art, began her journey in the lush landscapes of Rasht, Iran, in 1944. Her path would soon lead her far beyond the borders of her homeland, taking her to the heart of Europe. It was at the prestigious Austria Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna that Lashai refined her mastery of decorative arts, a period of study that instilled in her a profound respect for classical technique. This European education provided the technical scaffolding upon which she would later build her unique, abstract language, blending the rigorous traditions of the West with the soulful essence of her Persian roots.

A Visionary Approach to Nature and Abstraction

Lashai’s artistic philosophy was never about the mere imitation of the physical world; instead, she sought to capture its very soul. Her work is a masterful dialogue between the meticulous traditions of 17th-century Northern European art and the fluid, emotive possibilities of contemporary abstraction. Rather than rendering every leaf or petal with photographic precision, she aimed for a symbolic and evocative understanding of nature. Through her brush, nature becomes a series of vague yet powerful impressions, allowing the viewer to experience the feeling of the natural world rather than just its visual details. This pursuit of essence over detail transformed her canvases into meditative spaces where light, form, and texture converge to tell a story of organic beauty.

A Lasting Legacy in the Global Art Canon

Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, Lashai’s presence was felt on the international stage, leaving an indelible mark on the global art community. Her exhibitions spanned continents, from the historic galleries of Milan and Basel to the academic halls of Berkeley, USA, and the vibrant cultural landscape of Sharjah. As a pioneer of Iranian contemporary art, she bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, inspiring subsequent generations of artists to explore the boundaries of abstraction. Today, her work remains a cornerstone of collections such as the Mah Art Gallery, serving as a testament to a life dedicated to finding the eternal within the ephemeral.
