Beskrivelse av samlerobjektet

In this pen and ink drawing, Muzaffar al-Din Shah (r. 1896–1907) and his attendant are shown kicking two servants on the floor. The bright but sparing use of color – only in the figures’ faces and headdress – brings attention to their garish features and exorbitant lifestyle based on material wealth and gluttony. Following in the great tradition of manuscript illustrations, Mohassess’s picture is a jibe at courtly life.

Om kunstneren

Ardeshir Mohassess: A Voice of Satirical Observation

Ardeshir Mohassess (also spelt Ardashir Mohasess, Persian: اردشير محصص, 9 September 1938 in Lahijan – 9 October 2008 in New York) was an Iranian illustrator, satirist, cartoonist and painter who resided in New York. He stands as a pivotal figure in the history of Iranian visual culture, recognized for his distinctive blend of meticulous detail and biting social commentary—a style that cemented his place among Iran’s most influential artists.

  • Early Life & Artistic Beginnings: Born in Rasht, Iran, Mohassess's formative years were marked by a profound connection to literature and art. His mother, Sorur Mahkāma Mohassess, was a celebrated poet and educator, fostering his early fascination with storytelling and visual expression. From the age of three, he began illustrating his mother’s bedtime stories, establishing a lifelong dedication to capturing narratives through imagery.

  • Education & Influences: Despite eschewing formal art training, Mohassess pursued a degree in Political Science and Law at Tehran University in 1962. However, it was the encouragement of a classmate who recognized his talent for drawing that propelled him toward a career in illustration and cartooning. He absorbed inspiration from prominent Western artists like Roland Topor, Ronald Searle, René Magritte, Saul Steinberg, and David Levine—artists whose stylistic approaches profoundly shaped his own distinctive visual language.

  • Career Highlights: Mohassess’s artistic journey commenced with Towfiq, a satirical journal that captivated him at the age of 24. For eight years, he honed his craft, developing a signature style characterized by dynamic lines and exaggerated facial features—a technique designed to amplify social critique. His work appeared in Kayhān and other Iranian periodicals, gaining widespread recognition for its sharp observations on political figures and societal norms.

  • International Recognition & Artistic Style: Mohassess’s breakthrough came with his collaboration with Jeune Afrique in 1972, introducing color into his drawings and establishing him as an internationally acclaimed artist. His illustrations graced the pages of leading graphic art magazines worldwide—Graphis (Switzerland), Graphic Design (Japan), Idea (Japan), Graphic (West Germany), Opus International (Paris), and Communication Arts (USA)—demonstrating his versatility and artistic vision.

  • Legacy & Significance: Mohassess’s enduring legacy resides in his unwavering commitment to using visual art as a tool for social critique. His meticulous attention to detail—evident in pieces like “Untitled” (1996), which captures the essence of Persian courtly life—combined with his satirical perspective solidified his position as one of Iran's foremost voices of dissent and artistic innovation. He passed away in New York City in 2008, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire artists and scholars alike.
