Beskrivelse av samlerobjektet

It has been said that history is written by the victors. The works of Victor Leguy point out how institutionalised or official accounts of history undergo simplification or obfuscation due to ideology, politics, ignorance or corruption. His project Structures for Invisible Borders (2016–17) focuses on histories and trajectories of migration and displacement, specifically in the context of São Paulo, Brazil. To do so he researched the lives of certain immigrants mentioned in the school textbook Snips of Old São Paulo, which severely downgrades the historical role that they played in Brazil. The artist established contact with their descendants through an action that is common among Amerindian peoples – the exchange – collecting objects texts, documents and photos in order to form a portrait of their divergent histories. Leguy then partially covered these objects, documents and photographs with a white line, suggesting erasure or disappearance, the sanitation of brutality and history, and indigenous and migrant history that are simplified or expurgated in the official narrative. For the Istanbul Biennial, Leguy extends his Brazil project with an investigation of Turkey’s migratory flows. His work centres on a library, coffee shop and bookstore called The Pages in the Fener neighbourhood of Istanbul, one of the city’s oldest districts. The shop contains Arabic translations of Western novels, as well as Syrian books, and in the wake of the Arab Spring as well as the civil war in Syria, its café has become a meeting point for young Arab exiles, such as Syrians, Iraqis, Libyans and Yemenis. Leguy is interested in Fener as a crossroads of history, exile and cultural transfer in a country that is experiencing the influx of 3.5 million Syrian refugees. For his contribution to the Istanbul Biennial, he is inviting people whom he met at this bookshop and café to exchange an object with him, or to give him one they want to get rid of. These objects are again partially painted white, recalling conditions of symbolic invisibility, and the whitewashing of information, narratives and histories.

Om kunstneren

Victor Leguy: Bridging Tradition and Innovation in Visual Culture

Victor Leguy, born in Brazil in 1979, is an artist whose practice embodies a fascinating dialogue between historical research and contemporary artistic experimentation. He distinguishes himself through a meticulous approach to hybrid production processes—a technique that seeks to capture the essence of collective memory while simultaneously questioning established narratives. This distinctive methodology informs his artwork, which delves into themes of public space, authenticity, and the role of failure within creative endeavors. Leguy’s work isn't merely aesthetically pleasing; it’s a deliberate intervention in history, rescuing overlooked details and reshaping them into powerful visual statements.
  • Early Influences & Education: Leguy’s artistic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design / Visual Arts from Mackenzie São Paulo (2003), followed by postgraduate studies at USP São Paulo focusing on Historical Relations and Languages (2005/06). These formative experiences instilled within him a foundational understanding of design principles alongside the critical analysis demanded by humanities disciplines.
  • The Hybrid Production Process: At the core of Leguy’s artistic process lies a commitment to combining traditional crafts with digital technologies. This deliberate fusion allows for a nuanced exploration of materiality and texture, juxtaposed against the precision and adaptability offered by computer-aided design (CAD). He meticulously considers how these contrasting elements contribute to conveying complex ideas about history and cultural context.
  • Research Focus: Authenticity & Systems: Leguy’s artistic research extends beyond mere visual representation. He investigates fundamental concepts such as authenticity—examining how it is constructed and challenged—and analyzes the intricate workings of systems, recognizing their inherent limitations and biases. This intellectual rigor informs his creative output, prompting him to question accepted interpretations and uncover hidden perspectives.
  • Notable Achievements & Exhibitions: Leguy’s work has garnered recognition within Brazil's artistic landscape. His projects have been showcased in prestigious institutions like Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer (Vilanova i la Geltrú), Musée Victor Hugo (Paris) and Chiesa di SS. Vittore e Carlo (Genoa). These exhibitions underscore his dedication to communicating significant cultural narratives through innovative visual mediums.
  • Historical Significance & Legacy: Leguy’s artistic practice contributes to a broader conversation about the role of art in preserving collective memory and confronting historical complexities. By reimagining archival materials and challenging dominant viewpoints, he encourages viewers to reconsider established understandings of history—a crucial endeavor in fostering critical engagement with cultural heritage.
