His decision to travel to Italy after winning a contest at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid in 1766 marked a pivotal moment. Beginning in 1773, he dedicated himself to creating elaborate designs for the Real Fábrica de Tapices (Royal Tapestry Factory) in Madrid, producing an impressive thirty-five cartoons over the course of nearly two decades.
