Lubo Kristek’s sculpture *Soul*, created in 1973 shortly after the passing of Arno Lehmann, stands as a testament to both artistic innovation and profound philosophical contemplation. Lehmann, a Salzburg-based sculptor known for his exploration of geometric forms and symbolic representations, profoundly influenced Kristek's creative vision.
Kristek’s approach wasn’t merely about crafting an object; it was about initiating an immersive experience—a conversation between the artwork itself and the viewer. He deliberately rejected conventional artistic methods, favoring a technique that embraced natural forces to imbue his sculptures with character. As Kristek eloquently stated in an interview with Sven Mueller for Collage magazine, “In my way of creation, human writing on the surface is intentionally suppressed.” This deliberate restraint allowed the sculpture’s materiality—specifically, flame oxidation—to communicate its essence directly.
Kristek drew inspiration from Lehmann's emblem of the sphere—a geometric shape representing wholeness, unity, and concentrated energy. This symbol is prominently positioned atop the sculpture’s central branch, signifying its dominance and conveying a sense of aspiration.
Kristek’s work emerged during a period marked by significant artistic experimentation in Europe following World War II. Lehmann's influence contributed to a broader movement toward challenging established conventions and prioritizing conceptual ideas over purely aesthetic considerations. The sculpture *Soul* reflects this spirit of intellectual curiosity and seeks to provoke contemplation about fundamental questions concerning existence.
*Soul* embodies the dynamic interplay between strength and vulnerability. The defeated branch symbolizes limitations, while the triumphant sphere represents perseverance and enlightenment—a visual metaphor for overcoming obstacles and achieving spiritual fulfillment. Its placement in a room with natural light enhances its contemplative atmosphere.
