Om samlarobjektet

Thomas Ewing (1789–1871) was a leading lawyer of the era. His initial foray into politics included a term as U.S. senator from Ohio and six months as secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Harrison and Tyler. President Taylor tapped Ewing as the first secretary of the Interior when the Department was established in 1849, inheriting disparate functions cast off from other Departments. Ewing was a proponent of westward expansion and a transcontinental railroad but was immediately responsible for the Land, Patent, and Pension Offices; Indian Affairs; and public buildings. Ewing earned the moniker “Butcher Ewing” for replacing employees on a partisan basis. At its inception, the Department occupied rented space at 15th and F Streets, N.W.

John Stanley Haggan (1946 – 2021): Echoes of Constable and the Soul of Irish Landscape

John Stanley Haggan, born in Belfast in 1946, emerged as a singular voice within Northern Irish landscape painting—a figure whose artistic vision resonated deeply with both traditional techniques and a profound connection to the natural world. His career spanned decades, marked by consistent dedication to capturing the ethereal beauty of Ireland’s Sperrins and Mournes mountains, earning him recognition as one of the foremost practitioners of tonalism in Britain. Haggan's distinctive style—characterized by muted palettes, atmospheric haze, and meticulous attention to detail—was frequently compared to that of Constable, reflecting a shared commitment to portraying landscapes with honesty and conveying their spiritual essence.
  • Early Life & Artistic Influences: Haggan’s formative years were steeped in the artistic traditions of Belfast, where he absorbed inspiration from masters like Turner and Whistler. These influences instilled within him a fascination for capturing fleeting moments of light and color—a preoccupation that would become central to his oeuvre.

His paintings were showcased in prestigious galleries throughout Britain and internationally, securing his place as a respected figure within the art world.
  • Recognition & Awards: Haggan’s dedication to his craft was acknowledged by numerous awards and accolades—including membership of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters—reflecting the esteem with which his peers regarded his artistic achievements.
  • Legacy & Influence: Haggan's enduring legacy lies in his ability to imbue landscapes with a sense of contemplative stillness and spiritual resonance—a quality that continues to inspire artists today.
