Om samlarobjektet

From the artist: Using the symbolic imagery of bras, I explore how the qualities I relate to, as a mature woman artist, have been shaped by global power dynamics during the last half-century. These qualities include being nurturing, compassionate, intuitive, productive and creative. As an 81-year-old artist, mother and grandmother, I have spent my career channeling, translating and expressing my feminine experience into an art practice. My two primary passions have been nurturing and caring for my husband and four daughters, and expressing my sculptural concerns through a female lens. My sculptures are made of wood - a hard, living material - which I soften and bend into supple, organic shapes. The resulting works reference the female body, and the ways in which it fosters protection and growth.Bras have an intimate relationship to female breasts, which themselves occupy many roles:source of nutrition, erotic zone, signifier of womanhood, and so on. Breasts are biological, butsociety expresses the expectations of womanhood through the function, appearance, and material of bras. They act as supportive garments, titillating lingerie, utilitarian objects and even armature. Drawing from my own lived experience, this work centers around the shifts in feminine identity in response to decades of socio-political pressure

Susan R. Manspeizer: Sculpting Emotion Through Organic Forms

Susan R. Manspeizer, born in New York City in 1940, has cultivated a remarkable artistic journey spanning over three decades—a testament to her unwavering dedication and profound understanding of sculptural expression. Her formative years instilled within her a sensitivity to natural forms and textures, which would become central to her distinctive aesthetic vision. This early influence is palpable throughout her oeuvre, where she consistently explores organic shapes and materials as conduits for conveying complex emotions and ideas. Manspeizer’s artistic development began with an intensive study of sculpture at Pratt Institute, honing her skills in manipulating wood—a medium she has embraced wholeheartedly and mastered with exceptional grace. Unlike many sculptors who gravitate towards rigid geometric structures, Manspeizer deliberately eschews such approaches, favoring instead fluid curves and asymmetrical compositions that mimic the rhythms of nature. This stylistic choice isn’t merely decorative; it serves as a deliberate strategy to communicate vulnerability and resilience—themes recurring throughout her artistic explorations. Her sculptural practice gained considerable momentum following graduation from Pratt, establishing herself as an educator alongside her creative pursuits. Teaching at institutions like Parsons School of Design allowed Manspeizer to nurture the next generation of artists while simultaneously refining her own artistic sensibilities. This dual role fostered a rich exchange between theory and practice, shaping her perspective on art’s ability to engage with both intellect and emotion. Manspeizer's work has garnered recognition from prestigious organizations and publications alike. Notable achievements include honorable mention awards from the National Arts Club and a First Place Sculpture Award from the Greenwich Art Society—testaments to her talent and dedication within the artistic community. Furthermore, she received the Best in Show Award from the New Rochelle Art Association, solidifying her reputation as a leading sculptor of her time. Her pieces have graced exhibitions across New York and the Northeast, captivating audiences with their understated beauty and evocative symbolism. Beyond individual accolades, Manspeizer’s contributions extend to broader artistic initiatives. She participated in the Art in Embassies program, showcasing her sculptures internationally—a powerful demonstration of American art's ability to foster cultural dialogue. Commissions from organizations such as Arts Westchester and the MS17 Art Project underscore her commitment to engaging with contemporary social issues through artistic expression. Her artwork has been featured prominently on platforms like Google Arts & Culture, ensuring that her distinctive sculptural style continues to inspire and resonate with a global audience.
