Theodore Garman remains one of the most poignant and enigmatic figures in the landscape of mid-20th-century British Modern Art. As the son of the celebrated sculptor Jacob Epstein and the artist Kathleen Garman, Theodore was born into the very heart of London's bohemian artistic circles. Though he was never publicly acknowledged by Epstein, the influence of such a powerful artistic presence is felt in the raw, emotional depth of his work. Garman’s formal training at the Chelsea School of Art provided him with the technical foundation to experiment with the avant-garde movements of his time. He moved beyond the rigid constraints of academic realism, instead embracing the bold, emotive power of Fauvism and the structural explorations of Post-Impressionism.
