His life, marked by travel and a deep connection with nature, profoundly influenced his distinctive style: a luminous, emotionally resonant abstraction that sought to capture not just visual forms but also the intangible essence of the landscape and the human psyche. Calcagno’s work stands as a testament to the power of observation, introspection, and a lifelong pursuit of artistic truth.
Calcagno's early years were spent immersed in the natural world. Growing up on his family’s ranch provided him with an intimate understanding of California’s diverse landscapes – from the rolling hills to the dramatic coastline. This formative experience instilled a deep appreciation for light, color, and form, which would later become central themes in his art. Following this rural upbringing, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where his artistic talent was recognized with first prize in the national Army art contest. His formal training began at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco under the tutelage of influential figures like Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Edward Corbett, and Richard Diebenkorn. A pivotal moment came with his relocation to Europe in 1950, where he studied at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and the Instituto d’Arte Statale in Florence, immersing himself in the artistic traditions of the Old World.

Initially influenced by Still’s use of large fields of color and monumental forms, he gradually developed a more lyrical and atmospheric approach.
