Gerhard Marx

South African artist Gerhard Marx creates striking woodblock prints with abstract forms & powerful imagery. Known for theatre & copyright controversy, he teaches at U. Witwatersrand.

Born in 1976, Marx completed his master's degree in Fine Arts cum laude at the University of Cape Town in 2004. He has worked with well-known artists such as William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company. He currently teaches at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Marx’s artistic journey began with a fascination for exploring spatial relationships—particularly how visual representations shape our understanding of space itself. This initial preoccupation continues to inform his work today, where he meticulously dissects and rearranges fragments of imagery to generate complex propositions that challenge conventional perspectives.

His distinctive style utilizes woodblock printing as a medium, favoring bold geometric shapes and forms that convey both visual impact and conceptual depth. Recurring motifs—often inspired by maps and architectural structures—reflect his interest in the interplay between representation and reality.

Notable collaborations include projects with William Kentridge, resulting in monumental sculptures like “The World On Its Hind Legs” and “Firewalker,” which explore themes of history, memory, and artistic interpretation.
