Popis díla

Sumakshi Singh’s interactive installations play with perspective to create ‘illusions’ that allow viewers to inhabit and alter her imagery through their movements. In, Between the Pages (2014) is an installation with references to the history of Kerala, both as a protagonist in the maritime voyages of the 14-17 centuries, and as a vibrant centre where early astronomer-mathematicians were fiercely pursuing the problems of locating themselves and the Earth within the cosmos. Close to the entry to the gallery is a table where audiences get their first glimpse of the illusion: The projected view of two manuscript pages where the various elements —birds, whirling planets and viewers such as themselves— are in motion. Turning away from it, they enter a 70 feet-long maze made of hanging paper scrolls that align from one angle to form the elusive manuscript page. These scrolls feature paintings, delicate collages and projected animations that bring to life a range of narratives: The cosmology of Surya Siddhanta, a Sanskrit treatise on astronomy dated to as far back as 4 CE; illustrations from the Hortus Malabaricus, a 17th century Dutch East India Company-initiated compendium on Kerala’s flora; and the mythology surrounding Vasco da Gama’s arrival in Calicut, poetically represented here by a star map of the sky as it appeared on the night he disembarked. At the other end of the gallery, a second projection ties together these fragments of history through yet another aligned view of the illusion where viewers find themselves reflected back as a part of the image, transformed into one of the characters in the pastiche manuscript.According to Singh, she has always considered voyages in the external world to be reflections of the inner journeys through which we seek to locate ourselves in “space, time, cultural history our own stories”.

Sumakshi Singh: Weaving Dreams and Memories

Born in Lucknow, India, in 1980, Sumakshi Singh’s artistic journey is a deeply personal exploration of the spaces between reality and illusion, memory and imagination. Her work—immersive installations, intricate drawings, and evocative paintings— invites viewers to step into dreamlike realms where familiar forms dissolve into shimmering mirages, prompting profound questions about perception and the nature of experience. Singh's practice isn’t merely about representation; it’s a deliberate excavation of personal history, cultural resonance, and metaphysical concepts, all rendered with a captivating blend of fragility and strength.

Singh’s artistic education laid a strong foundation for her distinctive style. She holds an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and a BFA from Maharaja Sayajiro University in Baroda, India. These formative experiences instilled within her a rigorous approach to craft while simultaneously nurturing a deep sensitivity to narrative and atmosphere. Throughout her career, she has been a dedicated educator, lecturing at prestigious institutions like Oxford University, Columbia University, and The Chicago Humanities Festival, as well as mentoring residencies for organizations such as The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Why Not Place. This commitment to fostering artistic growth underscores her belief in the transformative power of art itself.

A Home Within a Canvas: Memory and Place

Central to Singh’s work is an unwavering connection to place, particularly her childhood home in Delhi—a site saturated with memories, stories, and familial rituals. The address, 33 Link Road, became the locus of countless gatherings, from storytelling sessions under the sun to family weddings and quiet moments of reflection. This intimate space, a container for generations of experiences, is frequently referenced in her art, most notably in “Untitled, a thread drawing,” where she meticulously recreates architectural facades, capturing not just their physical form but also the intangible essence of home.

Singh’s artistic process often involves layering personal history with broader cultural and historical contexts. Her work isn't simply nostalgic; it’s an interrogation of how memory shapes our understanding of reality. The partition of India, a defining event in her family’s narrative, serves as a poignant backdrop to many of her pieces, prompting reflections on displacement, identity, and the enduring legacy of trauma. She skillfully employs techniques like thread drawing—a method that allows for intricate detail while conveying a sense of ethereal fragility—to create works that are both visually arresting and emotionally resonant.

Global Recognition and Artistic Influence

Singh’s work has garnered significant international recognition, solidifying her position as a leading contemporary Indian artist. She has exhibited at prestigious venues including the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the Vancouver Biennale, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Her installations have been featured in prominent galleries worldwide, such as UCCA Beijing, Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art, Pittsburgh, NY, Van Harrison Gallery New York, IL, Illinois State Museum, Charleston, SC, Kashya Hildebrand Galerie Zurich Halsey Gallery, TX.

Beyond her solo exhibitions, Singh has collaborated with renowned institutions and organizations. Notably, she designed the iconic windows for Hermès India, a testament to her design sensibilities and artistic vision. She’s also been a key figure in nurturing emerging talent through mentorship programs at The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Why Not Place. Her contributions have been formally acknowledged through numerous awards, including the Asia Arts Future Game Changer award by the Asia Society (2022), the YFLO award for achievement in the arts (2019), a Zegna Grant (2009), an Illinois Arts Council Award (2007), and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award (2005). These accolades underscore her profound impact on the contemporary art landscape.

Exploring the Ephemeral: Space, Time, and Perception

Singh’s artistic practice consistently grapples with themes of impermanence, illusion, and the subjective nature of reality. Her work often utilizes techniques that deliberately disrupt our expectations—creating disconcerting phenomenological encounters designed to challenge conventional notions of fixed universes. She draws inspiration from concepts like space-time theories, cultural critiques of place, and explorations of mapping and displacement.

In her 2014 residency at the Vancouver Biennale, Singh’s work was described as “traversing lines between Metaphor, Reality and Illusion,” utilizing "disconcerting phenomenological encounters to ask questions about permanence and transience, object and image, fact and illusion, mapping and displacement, perception and knowledge, here and there while critiquing notions of ‘fixed“ universes and exposing the fragile set of givens upon which meaning is constructed.” This ongoing investigation into the boundaries of perception continues to shape her artistic vision, cementing her place as a significant voice in contemporary art.
