Details zum Sammlerstück

What does light look like? Luke Jerram’s kinetic sculpture makes light visible by converting photons into movement. As infrared light (from the sun and tiny LEDs) shines on the sculpture, it warms up the vanes inside each glass globe, or radiometer. The black sides of the paddles absorb more heat than the white sides, and the uneven heat distribution causes the vanes to spin. Because the process only occurs within a near-vacuum, radiometers containing more air will spin less. With 330 radiometers delicately wired to an acrylic framework, the sculpture shimmers, casting flickering shadows onto the nearby walls. It also emits a faint clinking—the sound of light.2014.4

Biografie des Künstlers

Luke Jerram: Sculpting Soundscapes and Illuminating Science

Luke Jerram is a British installation artist born in Stroud, United Kingdom (1974), whose practice transcends conventional artistic boundaries, fusing sculpture, immersive sound installations, and collaborative projects to explore the intersection of science, space exploration, and human perception. From his early fascination with astronomy—evident in monumental sculptures depicting celestial bodies like Luna and Gaia—to his commitment to fostering creativity within educational institutions through initiatives like Dreamtime Fellowship and Bristol Schools Arts Fund, Jerram’s artistic journey has been marked by a singular vision: to communicate complex scientific concepts in ways that resonate emotionally with audiences worldwide.

Early Life & Education

Jerram's passion for art began at a young age, nurtured by formative experiences within his hometown of Stroud and reinforced by his studies at Cardiff University (Wales), where he pursued Fine Art degrees. Recognizing the importance of broadening his artistic horizons, he embarked on a fellowship at Saint Lawrence University in New York State, immersing himself in diverse cultural perspectives and honing his understanding of visual communication—skills that would prove invaluable throughout his subsequent career. This early exposure to both art history and scientific inquiry laid the groundwork for Jerram’s distinctive approach to creative expression.

Sculptural Innovation: Craftsmanship Meets Conceptual Depth

Jerram's sculptural work consistently pushes the boundaries of materiality and form, demonstrating a masterful command of techniques like glassblowing and casting. He doesn’t merely create aesthetically pleasing objects; rather, he imbues them with conceptual depth—often reflecting profound scientific ideas. Notable projects include *Chrysler Chandelier*, a striking glass sculpture that meticulously captures the rhythms of global financial markets—a daring experiment in translating complex data into visual form—and *Glass Microbiology*, which reimagines viruses as miniature sculptures—a testament to his unwavering attention to detail and intellectual curiosity. The resulting pieces are imbued with both beauty and meaning, reflecting Jerram’s belief that art can serve as a powerful tool for conveying knowledge and stimulating contemplation.

Immersive Sound Installations: Transforming Perception

Jerram's breakthrough came with *Tide*, a groundbreaking acoustic sculpture that translated gravitational data into sound—a remarkable achievement in translating scientific information into an accessible sensory experience. This project exemplifies Jerram’s commitment to engaging audiences on multiple levels, prompting them to consider the influence of celestial mechanics on Earth’s environment. Subsequent installations like *Gaia*—a 7-meter spherical artwork representing the Earth—and *Helios*, a monumental sculpture depicting the Sun—have solidified his reputation as a pioneer in immersive art experiences, captivating viewers with breathtaking visuals and evocative sonic landscapes that foster a deeper understanding of our planet and its place within the cosmos.

Collaborative Projects & Recognition

Recognizing the importance of fostering creativity and disseminating knowledge beyond the studio, Jerram actively collaborates with scientists, educators, and musicians—a practice that underscores his belief in the transformative power of artistic dialogue. His dedication extends beyond artistic endeavors; he founded Dreamtime Fellowship and Bristol Schools Arts Fund to support emerging artists and enrich educational programs in his hometown—demonstrating a genuine desire to inspire future generations of creatives. This collaborative spirit has earned him widespread acclaim, including honorary doctorates from the University of Bristol and University of Gloucestershire, Fellowships from The Royal Astronomical Society and RWA, and numerous awards recognizing his artistic excellence and commitment to promoting scientific literacy.

Legacy & Artistic Significance

Luke Jerram’s enduring legacy lies in his ability to synthesize seemingly disparate disciplines—art and science—into artworks that resonate emotionally with audiences while fostering intellectual curiosity. He has fundamentally altered the way we perceive space, time, and our relationship to the natural world through immersive installations that combine stunning visuals with captivating soundscapes—a pioneering approach that continues to inspire artists and scholars alike. His work stands as a testament to the power of creativity to illuminate complex ideas and transform perspectives—a contribution that secures his place among Britain’s most influential contemporary sculptors and installation artists.
