Collectible Description

From the Artist: When I retired from teaching, I had a lot of time on my hands, so I started looking for something to do. I began in community theater with the Clocktower Players in Irvington and did some improv. While working in Camp Mohawk as a woodshop specialist, I started drawing with a bandsaw and with a woodburning kit. I started whittling and decorating walking sticks. I felt I should take up art. I took a drawing class at the Bronx UFT office, where they offered classes for retired school personnel. I followed that up with a workshop on acrylics. When the severity of the Covid 19 became apparent, going indoors became dangerous, but we had the outdoors. Fortunately in Westchester, there are many beautiful places to walk safely. When I see something that appeals to me, I take photos. Sometimes I paint them.

Artist Biography

The Unexpected Awakening of a Creative Spirit

The journey of Andrew Ravick is a profound testament to the idea that the most vibrant chapters of life can begin long after the traditional milestones of a career have passed. Born in Ardsley, New York, in 1945, Ravick spent much of his life dedicated to the noble profession of education. However, it was upon his retirement from teaching that a dormant creative impulse began to stir, transforming a period of quiet transition into an era of profound visual exploration. This metamorphosis was not sudden but rather a gradual unfolding, sparked by the communal energy of local theater and a desire to find new ways to interpret the world around him.

His early foray into the arts was deeply intertwined with the collaborative spirit of community theater, specifically through his involvement with the Clocktower Players in Irvington. This period of improvisation and performance provided more than just entertainment; it instilled in him a fundamental understanding of composition, drama, and the art of storytelling. As he transitioned from the stage to the studio, he brought with him this theatrical sensibility, learning to treat the canvas as a space where light and shadow could perform their own silent dramas.

From Woodwork to the Fluidity of Acrylics

Before finding his true voice in painting, Ravick explored the tactile boundaries of sculpture and craft. While serving as a woodshop specialist at Camp Mohawk, he experimented with the raw textures of nature, using tools like bandsaws and woodburning kits to create intricate designs on walking sticks. This period of whittling and decorating allowed him to develop a meticulous eye for detail and a deep respect for the physical properties of his medium. It was this foundational appreciation for texture that would eventually inform his approach to the more fluid medium of acrylic paint.

Seeking formal structure for his burgeoning passion, Ravick sought instruction through drawing classes at the Bronx UFT office, specifically designed for retired school personnel. This academic grounding, followed by specialized workshops in acrylics, allowed him to bridge the gap between spontaneous creativity and technical mastery. He began to move away from the rigid lines of wood and toward the soft, atmospheric possibilities of paint, discovering how layering could mimic the ephemeral qualities of light and air.

Capturing the Serenity of the American Landscape

The heart of Ravick’s oeuvre lies in his ability to capture tranquility through the medium of landscape painting. His work often serves as a visual meditation on the beauty found in the familiar, particularly within the scenic vistas of Westchester. He employs a sophisticated layering technique within his acrylic works, building up pigments to create nuanced gradations that suggest the movement of light across a horizon. This method allows him to achieve a sense of depth and atmosphere that invites the viewer to step into the scene.

His signature masterpiece, Ardsley Sunset, stands as a definitive example of his artistic philosophy. In this work, the palette is dominated by a warm, emotive spectrum of oranges, reds, and yellows—colors that evoke the fleeting glory of dusk and a sense of profound optimism. Through his brush, the setting sun becomes more than just a celestial event; it becomes a symbol of warmth and the peaceful conclusion of a day. His ability to blend elements of realism with impressionistic light makes his landscapes not merely depictions of places, but emotional experiences that resonate with the quiet beauty of the natural world.
