Collectible Description

In observation of the current conditions of Daebudo Island (Daebudo), in which a traditional way of living is rapidly changing due to the indiscreet redevelopments of the area into a leisure and tourist attraction, I intend to rearrange the landscape of Daebudo as one of the remaining islands in the west sea. Promenade is a French word, meaning a ‘walk’ or ‘trail.’ Besidethe simple meaning of ‘walking,’ this word evokes sensual as well as intellectual interactions, such as seeing, feeling, and thinking that one engages with, while taking a walk. I can tell from my experience that nothing is better than taking a walk when it comes to learning about geological locations, characteristics, and the environment of a new place. The crab trap in a circular shape used in the project is one of the fishing tools I paid attention to when I first visited Daebudo. One day a fishing boat owner told me that out-of-use fishing traps are mostly thrown into the sea owing to their disposal cost. These fishing traps abandoned in the sea are a threat to the marine ecosystem and environment. It is the main cause of ocean contamination and “ghost fishing” in this area, devastating water resources. I wanted to unravel these materials I discovered, the people of Daebudo I met, and the episodes I collected from the people in the different context of a ‘walk.’ I would like to suggest another landscape that brings the stories related to the area to light, through which the visitors feel, experience, and see the scenery of the reed field and the natural ecology between the fishing traps. At the same time, they learn about the tragic history of Seongamdo and the Seongam reformatory, while slowly taking a walk by the Promenade leading to the reed trail.

Artist Biography

Jung Sung-Won: From Runway Model to Projection Drawing Artist

Sung Won Jung, born April 22nd, 1973 in South Korea, embarked on an artistic journey that defies conventional categorization—a path forged from the spotlight of Korean cinema and now illuminated by a captivating exploration of projection drawing. Initially recognized as a successful fashion model, Jung’s trajectory shifted dramatically when he captivated audiences with his breakout role in *Beat*, a gritty gangster film released in 1997, earning him Best New Actor accolades at the 17th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. This early success established him as a formidable talent within the industry and cemented his reputation for versatility. Beyond acting, Jung’s artistic pursuits reveal an unexpected passion—a dedication to a technique that blends spontaneity with meticulous observation. He honed his skills through extensive training in classical ballet, fostering discipline and precision that would later translate into his distinctive visual style. Influenced by Surrealist painters like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi, Jung's approach prioritizes capturing fleeting moments of beauty and emotion—a sensibility evident in his ongoing exploration of projection drawing. Projection drawing is a technique where an artist meticulously renders a scene or subject onto paper using graphite pencils, then projects it onto the same surface, allowing for subtle adjustments to color and tonal variations as they emerge during the process. This method allows Jung to capture not just what he sees initially but also how light interacts with form—a fascinating interplay between planned execution and serendipitous discovery. It’s a technique that speaks to his belief in embracing chance while maintaining artistic control, mirroring themes found throughout his filmography. Jung's work consistently delves into narratives of human connection and vulnerability. Films like *A Moment to Remember*, *The Host*, and *Train To Busan* showcase his ability to portray complex characters grappling with profound emotional experiences. He’s lauded for his nuanced performances that resonate deeply with audiences, demonstrating a remarkable capacity for empathy and conveying subtle nuances of feeling. His collaborations with acclaimed directors have solidified his position as one of Korea's leading actors. Currently serving as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jung Sung-Won utilizes his platform to advocate for refugee rights and humanitarian aid—a testament to his commitment to social responsibility alongside his artistic endeavors. He embodies the spirit of blending creativity with compassion, demonstrating that art can serve as a powerful tool for fostering understanding and promoting positive change. His ongoing exploration of projection drawing continues to push boundaries within contemporary Korean art, offering viewers a glimpse into the artist’s unique perspective on capturing beauty and emotion in an ever-evolving world.
