Calcagno's early years were spent immersed in the natural world. Following this rural upbringing, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where his artistic talent was recognized with first prize in the national Army art contest. His formal training began at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco under the tutelage of influential figures like Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Edward Corbett, and Richard Diebenkorn. These teachers exposed him to a range of approaches – Rothko’s exploration of color fields, Still’s monumental forms, and Diebenkorn's Bay Area landscapes – all of which contributed to the development of Calcagno’s unique visual language. A pivotal moment came with his relocation to Europe in 1950, where he studied at L’Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and the Instituto d’Arte Statale in Florence, immersing himself in the artistic traditions of the Old World.

Initially influenced by Still’s use of large fields of color and monumental forms, he gradually developed a more lyrical and atmospheric approach.
