Artwork Description

What does light look like? Luke Jerram’s kinetic sculpture makes light visible by converting photons into movement. As infrared light (from the sun and tiny LEDs) shines on the sculpture, it warms up the vanes inside each glass globe, or radiometer. The black sides of the paddles absorb more heat than the white sides, and the uneven heat distribution causes the vanes to spin. Because the process only occurs within a near-vacuum, radiometers containing more air will spin less. With 330 radiometers delicately wired to an acrylic framework, the sculpture shimmers, casting flickering shadows onto the nearby walls. It also emits a faint clinking—the sound of light.2014.4

Artist Biography

Luke Jerram: Sculpting Soundscapes and Illuminating Science

Luke Jerram is a British installation artist born in Stroud, United Kingdom (1974), whose practice transcends conventional artistic boundaries, fusing sculpture, immersive sound installations, and collaborative projects to explore the intersection of science, space exploration, and human perception. From his early fascination with astronomy—evident in monumental sculptures depicting celestial bodies like Luna and Gaia—to his commitment to fostering creativity within educational institutions through initiatives like Dreamtime Fellowship and Bristol Schools Arts Fund, Jerram’s artistic journey has been marked by a singular vision: to communicate complex scientific concepts in ways that resonate emotionally with audiences worldwide.
  • Early Life & Education: Jerram pursued his undergraduate studies at Cardiff University (Wales), focusing on Fine Art, followed by a fellowship at Saint Lawrence University in New York State, where he honed his understanding of visual communication and engaged with diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Sculptural Innovation: His sculptural work consistently pushes the boundaries of materiality and form, utilizing techniques like glassblowing and casting to create evocative pieces that capture both aesthetic beauty and conceptual depth. Notable projects include *Chrysler Chandelier*, a striking glass sculpture reflecting the rhythms of global financial markets, and *Glass Microbiology*, which reimagines viruses as miniature sculptures—a testament to his meticulous attention to detail and scientific curiosity.
  • Immersive Sound Installations: Jerram’s breakthrough came with *Tide*, a groundbreaking acoustic sculpture that translated gravitational data into sound, demonstrating the profound influence of celestial mechanics on Earth's environment. Subsequent installations like *Gaia*—a 7-meter spherical artwork representing the Earth—and *Helios*, a monumental sculpture depicting the Sun—have cemented his reputation as a pioneer in immersive art experiences, captivating audiences with breathtaking visuals and evocative sonic landscapes.
  • Collaborative Projects & Outreach: Recognizing the importance of engaging communities and fostering creativity, Jerram actively collaborates with scientists, educators, and musicians to develop projects that inspire wonder and promote scientific literacy. His commitment extends beyond artistic endeavors; he founded Dreamtime Fellowship and Bristol Schools Arts Fund to support emerging artists and enrich educational programs in his hometown.
  • Recognition & Legacy: Luke Jerram’s work has garnered international acclaim, earning him honorary doctorates from the University of Bristol and University of Gloucestershire, Fellowships from The Royal Astronomical Society and RWA, and numerous awards recognizing his artistic excellence and dedication to promoting scientific understanding. His enduring influence lies in his ability to transform complex ideas into accessible art forms—a legacy that continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.
## Notable Achievements & Artistic Style Jerram’s distinctive artistic style is characterized by a meticulous blend of sculptural craftsmanship and immersive sound design, resulting in artworks that transcend traditional mediums. He skillfully employs glassblowing techniques—often incorporating dichroic film—to create translucent sculptures that capture light and color with remarkable precision. These pieces are frequently accompanied by carefully crafted sonic compositions that respond to visual stimuli, generating experiences that stimulate both the senses and intellect. His fascination with astronomy informs his artistic vision, driving him to explore themes of scale, perspective, and the interconnectedness of Earth and space. ## Influences & Inspirations Jerram’s artistic sensibilities are shaped by a diverse range of influences—spanning from classical sculpture to contemporary music and neuroscience—reflecting his intellectual curiosity and commitment to pushing creative boundaries. He draws inspiration from scientific discoveries about gravitational forces, planetary atmospheres, and the human brain's capacity for perception, translating these concepts into evocative visual and auditory experiences. Furthermore, Jerram’s engagement with collaborative projects underscores his belief in the transformative power of artistic dialogue—a conviction that fuels his ongoing exploration of new ideas and techniques. ## Major Installations & Exhibitions Luke Jerram’s artworks have graced venues across the globe, captivating audiences in over 25 countries and earning him recognition as one of Britain's leading installation artists. Among his most celebrated projects are *Museum of the Moon*, a monumental spherical artwork depicting the lunar surface at high resolution—presented at festivals like Glastonbury and BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing—and *Gaia*, which has been exhibited in major cities worldwide, including Aarhus (Denmark), fostering public engagement with scientific concepts. His commitment to disseminating knowledge through art continues to solidify his position as a visionary artist shaping cultural conversations about science and creativity.
