Descripción del coleccionable

Since Maurizio Galimberti discovered Polaroid in 1983 he has been exploring its creative potential to the full, becoming one of the leading experimenters with the instant film support. In his works the final image is composed through the juxtapositioning of individual shots on the basis of a recognisable modus operandi (Polaroid mosaic) through which he has portrayed ordinary people, cities and the world of show business. In his hands the Polaroid camera is a means of knowledge and discovery with which he enters into contact with the subject through continuous shots in what is almost a performance. Moreover, instant development permits the magical and material process of photography takes place: the image emerges slowly, taking form and coming to life through the support. Just as with his portraits of people, in the case of MAXXI too the overall image is composed of a mosaic of points of view for a facetted, changeable and shimmering portrait of Zaha Hadid’s imposing architecture.

Biografía del artista

Maurizio Galimberti: The Surrealist Lens of Everyday Life

Maurizio Galimberti, born in Como in 1956, stands as Italy’s foremost champion of instant photography—a medium he embraced with unwavering devotion and transformed into an art form unlike any other. Moving to Milan shortly after his formative years, he has established himself as a prolific artist whose work continues to enthrall audiences globally. His artistic journey commenced with the unassuming Polaroid camera, igniting an obsession that would indelibly shape his creative vision for decades onward. Galimberti’s approach to photography transcends mere documentation; it pulsates with a profound Surrealist sensibility—a deliberate quest to capture fleeting moments—fragments of daily life interwoven with startling juxtapositions—resulting in images that resonate with subconscious emotion and invite contemplation. This stylistic choice distinguishes him from many contemporaries, firmly anchoring him within the broader panorama of avant-garde art movements. He draws inspiration from masters like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi, artists who similarly navigated the delicate equilibrium between reality and imagination. His distinctive style manifests in meticulously arranged objects—domestic items, architectural details—presented in unconventional perspectives—generating unsettling yet strangely harmonious visual narratives. This technique isn’t merely stylistic; it embodies a deeper philosophical preoccupation with probing the hidden dimensions of perception and experience. Galimberti doesn't strive for photographic precision but rather seeks to distill emotion into singular images, capturing the essence of transient instants with remarkable sensitivity. Throughout his illustrious career, Galimberti has garnered international acclaim, showcasing his photographs in prestigious institutions such as MoMA in New York and MAXXI in Rome. Collaborations with prominent brands like Fiat and Ferrari further solidified his reputation as a visionary artist who seamlessly blends artistic expression with commercial recognition. Notably, he received the Knight Commander’s Cross of Merit from the Italian Republic for his invaluable contribution to the arts—a testament to his enduring legacy.
  • Early Years & Initial Exploration: Galimberti's fascination with photography began with the Polaroid camera in 1983, marking a pivotal moment in his artistic trajectory.
  • Surrealist Influences: His stylistic vision is profoundly shaped by Surrealist artists like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi, who similarly explored the intersection between reality and imagination.

The Polaroid Technique & Artistic Vision

Galimberti’s mastery resides in his ability to harness the inherent limitations of the Polaroid process—the unpredictable emulsion chemistry, the irreversible nature of the print—to elevate photography beyond mere reproduction. Rather than pursuing technical perfection, he embraces imperfections as integral components of artistic expression. The resulting images possess a tactile quality and an ethereal luminescence that captures the essence of fleeting instants with remarkable sensitivity. He skillfully manipulates lighting and framing to heighten emotional impact, transforming ordinary scenes into evocative visual poems. This deliberate approach underscores his belief that beauty can be found in unexpected places—a conviction reflected throughout his oeuvre.

Institutional Recognition & Collaborative Projects

His work has been recognized by leading museums and galleries internationally, cementing his position as a pivotal figure in contemporary art. Exhibitions at MAXXI and Triennale Milano have provided platforms for showcasing his artistic vision to vast audiences. Furthermore, collaborations with renowned brands like Fiat and Ferrari demonstrate Galimberti’s ability to engage with popular culture while maintaining artistic integrity—a harmonious blend of creativity and commercial success.
  • Notable Exhibitions: His photographs have graced the walls of MoMA in New York and MAXXI in Rome, attracting critical acclaim and establishing his reputation as a globally respected artist.
  • Collaborations: Partnerships with brands such as Fiat and Ferrari underscore Galimberti’s artistic versatility and engagement with contemporary culture.

A Continuing Legacy & Philosophical Depth

Maurizio Galimberti continues to produce captivating photographs that explore themes of memory, perception, and the beauty found in unexpected places. His unwavering commitment to his singular style ensures that his contribution to instant photography—and indeed, to art itself—will endure for generations to come. He embodies a profound philosophical depth—a belief that artistic expression should transcend conventional boundaries—leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Italian contemporary art.
