Amr Fahed: Capturing Sorrow and Resilience Through Digital Art

Amr Fahed, born in Al-Suwayda, Syria in 1982, is a Syrian digital artist whose work powerfully confronts the realities of conflict and champions the unwavering spirit of Syrian children. Living primarily in Damascus, he’s gained international recognition for his poignant explorations of trauma and hope through meticulously crafted photographic manipulations and digital compositions. Fahed's artistic journey began with formal training at Damascus University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in 2007 where he honed his sculptural skills before transitioning to a medium that perfectly suited his vision: digital art. Recognizing the urgent need to document and communicate the experiences of Syrian children displaced by war, Fahed embarked on a mission to transform raw photographic images into evocative narratives—a deliberate act of artistic intervention aimed at amplifying voices often silenced by circumstance. His distinctive style is characterized by a technique he describes as “reworking” photographs. Rather than simply presenting unaltered images, Fahed employs sophisticated editing processes – scratching, layering textures, altering colors, and manipulating perspectives – to imbue his work with layers of meaning. This approach isn’t merely aesthetic; it's conceptual—a conscious effort to convey the profound emotional impact of witnessing suffering while simultaneously celebrating resilience. As he explains, “I want to show these images to the world, he wants the world to be aware of the immeasurable damage that such crimes have had and still have on these children: children in pain, who will turn into angels and lead their country to take its flight.” Notable exhibitions showcasing Fahed’s artistic endeavors include appearances at 4 Walls Art Gallery in Dubai, Alfa Gallery, Domar Culture Center and Al Keshle Gallery in Damascus. He participated in the Sharjah Islamic Art Festival in 2010, cementing his position as a prominent voice within contemporary Syrian art. Particularly impactful is his series “Syrian Children in the Crossfire,” where Fahed painstakingly reworked photographs taken during initial events in Syria—adding deliberate distortions and alterations to heighten emotional resonance. The resulting images depict children’s faces transformed into angels or birds morphing into planes, symbolizing transformation and conveying a timeless universe grappling with themes of life and death. His artistic inspiration stems from the palpable gaze of Syrian children – a complex blend of sadness and joy that embodies an extraordinary duality. Fahed seeks to capture this essence, translating it into visual representations that resonate deeply with viewers and serve as a testament to the enduring human spirit amidst adversity. He continues to explore themes of displacement and vulnerability through his art, furthering his commitment to documenting and communicating the experiences of Syrian children affected by conflict.
