In the industrial heart of Warri, Nigeria, where the remnants of metalwork and urban decay coalesce, the artistic soul of Olukayode Amoda began to take shape. Born in 1959, Amoda’s early life was deeply intertwined with the tactile world of metallurgy; as the son of a goldsmith, he was introduced to the transformative potential of malleable materials long before he ever stepped into a formal studio. This foundational connection to metalworking would later become the cornerstone of his mature practice, allowing him to view the discarded not as waste, but as a profound medium for storytelling. Growing up amidst the scrap-rich landscapes of the Niger Delta, Amoda developed an innate ability to see beauty and narrative within the rusted, the broken, and the forgotten.
Amoda’s formal journey into the world of fine arts led him through the rigorous technical training of Auchi Polytechnic, a period that provided the structural discipline necessary for his later conceptual leaps. His pursuit of artistic excellence eventually took him across the Atlantic to Georgia Southern University in the United States, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. This international exposure served as a vital catalyst, blending his Nigerian heritage with global contemporary art discourses. It was during this period of academic and cultural expansion that Amoda began to refine his unique sculptural language—a method of interrogating rather than merely creating, using the weight and texture of industrial detritus to pose questions about resilience and societal evolution.
The true brilliance of Amoda’s work lies in his masterful use of found objects. He does not shy away from the grit of reality; instead, he embraces it, welding together a mosaic of rusted nails, scrap metal plates, bolts, pipes, spoons, and stirrers. Each piece of debris carries its own history, and through Amoda’s hands, these fragments are resurrected to serve as poignant commentaries on Nigerian society. His sculptures often embody a striking duality—the strength of the heavy metal juxtaposed against the vulnerability of the forms he creates. Whether depicting the delicate petals of a Sunflower or the mysterious presence of the Queen of the Night, his work breathes life into the inanimate, turning industrial waste into organic, breathing symbols of identity.

As a dedicated educator, he has been a pillar of the artistic community in Lagos, teaching sculpture and drawing at the Yaba College of Technology since 1987.
