作品の詳細

Since Maurizio Galimberti discovered Polaroid in 1983 he has been exploring its creative potential to the full, becoming one of the leading experimenters with the instant film support. In his works the final image is composed through the juxtapositioning of individual shots on the basis of a recognisable modus operandi (Polaroid mosaic) through which he has portrayed ordinary people, cities and the world of show business. In his hands the Polaroid camera is a means of knowledge and discovery with which he enters into contact with the subject through continuous shots in what is almost a performance. Moreover, instant development permits the magical and material process of photography takes place: the image emerges slowly, taking form and coming to life through the support. Just as with his portraits of people, in the case of MAXXI too the overall image is composed of a mosaic of points of view for a facetted, changeable and shimmering portrait of Zaha Hadid’s imposing architecture.

作家の略歴

Maurizio Galimberti: The Surrealist Lens of Everyday Life

Maurizio Galimberti, born in Como in 1956, is arguably Italy’s foremost practitioner of instant photography – a medium he embraced with unwavering dedication and transformed into an art form unlike any other. Moving to Milan shortly after his formative years, he has established himself as a prolific artist whose work continues to captivate audiences globally. His journey began with the simple Polaroid camera, sparking an obsession that would define his artistic vision for decades to come. Galimberti’s approach to photography transcends mere documentation; it's imbued with a profound sense of surrealism and dreamlike beauty. Unlike traditional photographic techniques striving for objective representation, he deliberately seeks to capture fleeting moments – fragments of daily life interwoven with unexpected juxtapositions—creating images that resonate with subconscious emotion and invite contemplation. This stylistic choice distinguishes him from many contemporaries and firmly places him within the broader context of avant-garde art movements. His distinctive style owes considerable debt to Surrealist pioneers like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi, artists who similarly explored the intersection between reality and imagination. Galimberti’s compositions often feature meticulously arranged objects—domestic items, architectural details—presented in unconventional perspectives, generating unsettling yet strangely harmonious visual narratives. This technique isn't merely stylistic; it reflects a deeper philosophical preoccupation with exploring the hidden dimensions of perception and experience. Throughout his career, Galimberti has garnered international acclaim, exhibiting his photographs in prestigious institutions such as MoMA in New York, MAXXI in Rome, and Triennale Milano. Collaborations with prominent brands like Fiat, Ferrari, and Bulgari further solidified his reputation as a visionary artist who seamlessly blends artistic expression with commercial success. In 2009, he received the Knight Commander’s Cross of Merit from the Italian Republic for his invaluable contribution to the arts—a testament to his enduring legacy.
  • Notable Achievements: Numerous solo exhibitions worldwide showcasing his distinctive Polaroid aesthetic.
  • Influences: Surrealist artists like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi; exploration of everyday life and subconscious perception.

Exploring the Polaroid Medium

Galimberti’s mastery lies in his ability to harness the inherent limitations of the Polaroid process—the unpredictable emulsion chemistry, the irreversible nature of the print—to elevate photography beyond mere reproduction. Rather than striving for technical perfection, he embraces imperfections as integral components of artistic expression. The resulting images possess a tactile quality and an ethereal luminescence that captures the essence of fleeting instants with remarkable sensitivity. He skillfully manipulates lighting and framing to heighten emotional impact, transforming ordinary scenes into evocative visual poems.

Institutional Recognition

His work has been recognized by leading museums and galleries internationally, cementing his position as a pivotal figure in contemporary art. Exhibitions at MAXXI and Triennale Milano have provided platforms for showcasing his artistic vision to vast audiences. Furthermore, collaborations with renowned brands demonstrate Galimberti’s ability to engage with popular culture while maintaining artistic integrity.

A Continuing Legacy

Maurizio Galimberti continues to produce captivating photographs that explore themes of memory, perception, and the beauty found in unexpected places. His unwavering commitment to his singular style ensures that his contribution to instant photography—and indeed, to art itself—will endure for generations to come.
