Battey’s technical mastery was forged in the prestigious studios of New York City, where he honed his craft under the rigorous standards of commercial excellence. His tenure at the Bradley Photographic Studio on Fifth Avenue and his leadership within the retouching department at Underwood & Underwood provided him with a sophisticated understanding of light manipulation. Embracing the Pictorialist movement, Battey moved away from the stark, clinical realism of traditional documentary photography.
