Marina Abramović’s upbringing profoundly shaped her artistic trajectory. Her great-uncle was Varnava, Serbian Patriarch, a figure of considerable religious significance within the Orthodox Church. Her parents, Danica Rosić and Vojin Abramović, were both involved in World War II as Partisans – resistance fighters against Nazi occupation. This familial history instilled in her a deep sense of resilience and a critical awareness of social and political forces. Early influences extended beyond her family; she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade (1970) and later at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb (1972), absorbing the avant-garde movements of the time, including Conceptual Art and Fluxus.
