Edwin Longsden Long, born in Bath, Somersetshire, England on July 12th, 1829, was a pivotal figure in the British art scene during the Victorian era. His artistic journey began with an early fascination for drawing—a talent nurtured at Dr. Viner’s School—that propelled him toward a distinguished career as a genre, history, biblical and portrait painter.
Long’s father, James Long, was a hairdresser, providing a contrasting backdrop to his son's burgeoning artistic inclinations. Despite initial setbacks in gaining admission to the Royal Academy Schools due to deficiencies in his drawing skills—a challenge he overcame by relocating back to Bath—Long persevered with unwavering dedication. His formative years were marked by intensive study at the British Museum, absorbing the stylistic innovations of masters like Rembrandt and Rubens, establishing a bedrock of technical expertise.
A transformative experience arrived during Long’s travels to Spain alongside fellow artist John Phillip RA. This immersion into Spanish art—particularly Velázquez’s dramatic use of light and color—deepened his artistic sensibilities profoundly. Returning to London, Long channeled these inspirations into paintings such as *La Posada* (1864) and *Lazarilla and the Blind Beggar* (1870), demonstrating a masterful synthesis of Baroque techniques and narrative storytelling.
Following his expeditions to Egypt and Syria in 1874, Long’s artistic focus shifted toward depicting biblical scenes with meticulous accuracy. Long’s talent was formally acknowledged when he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1870—a step culminating in his full Academician status (RA) in 1881.
