Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Hart’s artistic journey began not with the camera, but with the delicate precision of an illustrator. His early training at Harvard University instilled in him a profound appreciation for classical aesthetics and landscape composition, qualities that would later distinguish his photographic work from the purely documentary style of his contemporaries.

Hart’s artistic sensibilities were deeply influenced by the grand traditions of landscape painting. He moved within circles of great American artists, notably collaborating with the celebrated painter Frederic Church on ambitious depictions of the American West.
