藏品详情

Nereida Apaza (Arequipa, 1979) offers a critique of the traditional education system and teaching methods based upon the repetition and memorizing of content. This work is composed of representations of lined and squared notebook pages, containing texts that evoke the tasks demanded by the traditional education system, with images that actually refer to the artist’s own memories, thoughts and emotions. These images contain the personal recollections of the artist; those things she chooses to recall and which form part of her own life experience, and that of her family.

艺术家简介

Nereida Apaza Mamani – Peruvian Artist Bridging Tradition and Innovation

Nereida Apaza Mamani, born in Arequipa, Peru, in 1979, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of Andean culture, social commentary, and contemporary artistic practices. Her artistic journey began with formal training at the Carlos Baca Flor School of Art, where she honed her skills in sculpture, artist’s notebooks, video art, painting, and engraving—techniques that would become foundational to her distinctive visual language.
  • Early Influences: Apaza's artistic vision is deeply rooted in Andean traditions, particularly the intricate embroidery of *negrería* dance bibs. These bibs are not merely decorative objects; they carry symbolic narratives reflecting significant historical events and figures within Peruvian society.
  • Solo Exhibitions: Her solo exhibitions showcase her commitment to conveying complex ideas through artistic mediums. Notable presentations include “The Light of Darkness” at Galería del Paseo (Lima, 2020), “Vivir” at C.C.. Peruvian North American (2019), “Time is a Myth” in the CC. Chaves de la Rosa (Arequipa 2018), and “El Fuego de los Niños” at the Santo Domingo-Qoricancha Convent Museum (Cusco 2010).

Multimedia Exploration: Sculpture, Notebooks & Beyond

Apaza’s artistic exploration extends beyond traditional painting and sculpture. She utilizes artist's notebooks as a vehicle for experimentation with diverse mediums—video art, montage, and intervention in public spaces—demonstrating her willingness to push boundaries and engage with broader societal contexts. Her approach is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a desire to provoke reflection on cultural heritage and contemporary realities.
  • Notable Projects: Among her accomplishments are the animated short film “Historia Secreta,” which garnered acclaim in the SWOT contest for experimental works (2019), securing the first prize in the national painting competition of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (2012).
  • Residency at Santo Domingo Center: She was honored with an artist residency by the Santo Domingo Center of Excellence for Latin American Research, fostering collaboration and furthering her artistic development.

London Residency & Artistic Dialogue

A pivotal moment in Apaza’s career arrived with her participation in a British Museum residency program, where she engaged in dialogue with fellow artists and explored new perspectives on creative expression. This experience solidified her commitment to intercultural exchange and broadened her artistic horizons. Her work reflects the influence of this immersive environment, incorporating elements of observation and reflection into her artistic process.
  • British Museum Collaborations: Apaza’s textile projects—including “La luz de la oscuridad cuaderno baja,” “Coral,” “Monumentos y cartas – Miguel Grau,” “Q****uipus,” and “Non Nete”—are particularly noteworthy for their conceptual depth and technical virtuosity.
  • Symbolic Representation: Her artistic endeavors delve into themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage, utilizing symbolic imagery—such as the Andean *quipu*—to convey profound narratives about Peruvian history and culture.

Contemporary Relevance & Artistic Legacy

Nereida Apaza Mamani’s artistic practice stands apart for its ability to synthesize traditional Andean aesthetics with innovative techniques, resulting in artworks that resonate powerfully with contemporary audiences. Her commitment to social commentary—evident in her exploration of national narratives and her engagement with pressing societal issues—underscores the enduring importance of art as a tool for critical reflection and cultural preservation. She continues to inspire artists and scholars alike, cementing her place as a significant voice within Latin American visual culture.
