Sinan Logie established the independent city research institute Center for Spatial Justice with Yaşar Adanalı in 2015. He is also co-author of the book “Istanbul 2023”, in which he and Yoann Morvan discuss the transformation and destruction Istanbul has undergone as they walk around the city. Logie, whose ongoing skateboarding practice has shaped his perception of the city and architecture for many years, deals with themes of freedom, body, movement, and speed in terms of modern architecture and urban planning, using these themes to create abstract city landscapes and architectural constructions. The ongoing series “Fluid Structures”, which began in 2000, consists of digital drawings and prints, juxtapositions on photographs, sculptures based on architectural models, and oil and ink paintings on canvas and paper. By bringing together abstract painting and modern architectural traditions, Logie interrogates two fundamental questions in architecture: building a structure and directing fluidity. He explores the present instantiations of these two concepts that mark each other’s boundaries and studies how to traverse the distance between them. In these two works from “Phase 12” series, Logie focuses on mobile, variable, and permeable spaces that cannot actually be built or experienced but can be imagined on the canvas surface through the use of pictorial elements like lines, stains, and colours.

艺术家简介

A Visionary Bridging Architecture and Artistic Expression

Sinan Logie, born in Brussels in 1974, represents a fascinating convergence of disciplines—architecture and artistic practice—resulting in a distinctive oeuvre that explores the complexities of urban environments and advocates for spatial justice. His journey began with formal studies at the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Victor Horta, grounding him firmly in the principles of modernist design while simultaneously nurturing an innate curiosity about creative exploration. This dual foundation would prove instrumental in shaping his artistic vision. Immediately after graduating, Logie joined L'Escaut, one of Belgium’s most innovative architectural firms, immersing himself in projects that prioritized functionality and aesthetic consideration. However, architecture wasn’t merely a profession for him; it served as a catalyst for artistic experimentation. Recognizing the inherent connections between spatial organization and human experience, he began to translate architectural concepts into sculptural installations—fluid structures designed to provoke contemplation on notions of movement, balance, and interconnectedness. Logie's artistic style is characterized by an almost meditative approach. He employs techniques rooted in minimalist design, favoring smooth surfaces and subtle color palettes that emphasize form and texture. Unlike traditional painting or sculpture, his pieces often defy conventional categorization, blurring the boundaries between architecture and art. This deliberate ambiguity reflects Logie’s broader philosophical stance—a belief that artistic endeavors should contribute to a deeper understanding of societal issues and promote inclusivity within urban spaces. His work has garnered international acclaim, notably showcased at Arter, Istanbul’s contemporary art museum. This recognition underscores Logie's commitment to engaging with global dialogues about design and social responsibility. Currently residing in Turkey, he continues to inspire students at Bilgi University’s Architecture Department, fostering a new generation of architects who embrace artistic sensibilities alongside technical proficiency. Logie’s enduring legacy lies not only in his individual creations but also in the conceptual framework underpinning them—a profound consideration for how built environments can shape human behavior and contribute to a more equitable society. Through his fluid structures and installations, Sinan Logie invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with space and encourages us to envision cities as places of harmonious coexistence and creative potential.
